Missouri Home Care Celebrates 30th Anniversary – Honors #1 Employee

Missouri Home Care celebrates a 30-year milestone of business and honors the #1 employee hired 30 years ago, Sadie Kohrmann. Sadie is still an active caregiver for Missouri Home Care in Gasconade County..

August 18, 2005 -- Sadie Kohrmann is a bon fide icon at Missouri Home Care and she’s got the employee number of #1 to prove it. Sadie was the very first home care worker hired by Missouri Home Care in 1975.

When Sadie applied for the job at Missouri Home Care, she thought she was applying to work as a Senior Companion.  She reports that she is very happy the actual job turned out to be so much more than just “sitting with people.”

When I asked Sadie what she likes best about her job, she replied without hesitation:  “Oh, it’s the people.  Definitely the people.  It’s the people I’ve taken care of over the years and the people I work with.  Also, Missouri Home Care provided me with so much training . . . . and they paid me to take the training, too!  I thought that was really something!”

“My training has been so helpful in my job and has made a difference when caring for my family, too.  And, the teamwork among the caregivers and nurses is just incredible.  I’m very fortunate to have the perfect job.”

Sadie has learned a lot about home health from her training at Missouri Home Care, but she also reports learning a lot from her clients, too.  Over the years, Sadie has observed that happy people live longer and that those who make the best of bad situations are generally healthier and happier.  She says she’s also learned a lot about what not to do and how not to behave as one grows older.

When I asked Sadie what had changed in home care over the years, she said that “back then” there wasn’t a lot of help for the elderly, at all.  “Missouri Home Care was the only agency of it’s kind and we took care of all the client’s needs.  Now, there are other kinds of assistance with meal and transportation and social supports available and more people qualify for services.”

Sadie’s advice to a new home care worker today would be this:  Don’t give up – keep at it and, above all else, be reliable.  Your clients count on you – don’t let them down.  You may be the only person who is really keeping this client going and safely cared for at home.  Your job is incredibly important.

Sadie can remember her very first two clients . . . she says they were both characters and both left an impression on her.  The first client baked toast every day for an imaginary friend and Sadie would remove the toast from the cold oven when she arrived at the client’s home the next morning.

The second client was estranged from his family and, as Sadie puts it, “he had really put up a wall.”

However, Sadie was able to work with the gentleman and build a relationship such that she was able to get him to be happily compliant with his plan of care.

Believe it or not, Sadie is 79 years young.  Although she has scaled back considerably, Sadie continues her work at Missouri Home Care as a field assistant and makes home visits and completes administrative paperwork every week.

I’ve known Sadie Kohrmann since I began working at Missouri Home Care 15 years ago, says Regional Vice President, Mary Kaye Kramme.  From the very first day I started my job, I heard stories about our #1 employee, Sadie Kohrmann.  When I finally met Sadie at an in-service meeting, I immediately understood why everyone spoke so highly of her.

Sadie is always smiling.  She’s kind, she’s smart, she’s a hard worker and she genuinely cares about her clients.  She does not complain and she finds a way to work effectively with all types of clients.

Sadie Korhmann is a gem of a person and an outstanding caregiver.  She’s worked in home care for the past 30 years and Missouri Home Care is grateful to Sadie for her dedication and the quality and excellence she has brought to her clients and the company.

Missouri Home Care is a home health agency providing services to over 2,500 patients and clients in 44 central and southern Missouri counties for the past 30 years.  The company has office locations in Rolla, West Plains, Mountain Grove, Poplar Bluff, Park Hills and Lake Ozark and can be reached by calling 1-800-354-2273 or, locally, at 341-3456.
